Anxiety Disorders: There many types of anxiety disorders that include panic
disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress syndrome, social
anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder. What are the types of anxiety disorders?
Eating Disorders: Eating is controlled by many factors, including appetite,
food availability, family, peer, and cultural practices, and attempts at
voluntary control. Dieting to a body weight leaner than needed for health is
highly promoted by current fashion trends, sales campaigns for special foods,
and in some activities and professions. Eating disorders involve serious
disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of
food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme
concern about body shape or weight. Researchers are investigating how and why
initially voluntary behaviors, such as eating smaller or larger amounts of food
than usual, at some point move beyond control in some people and develop into
an eating disorder. Studies on the basic biology of appetite control and its
alteration by prolonged overeating or starvation have uncovered enormous
complexity, but in the long run have the potential to lead to new medication
treatments for eating disorders. Learn more about eating disorders.
Adjustment Disorders: A person with
adjustment disorder often experiences feelings of depression or anxiety or
combined depression and anxiety. As a result, that person may act out
behaviorally against the "rules and regulations" of family, work, or
society. In some people, an adjustment disorder may manifest itself in such
behaviors as skipping school, unexpected fighting, recklessness, or legal
problems. Other people, however, instead of acting out, may tend to withdraw
socially and isolate themselves during their adjustment problems. Still others
may not experience behavioral disturbances, but will begin to suffer from
physical illness. If someone is already suffering from a medical illness, that
condition may worsen during the time of the adjustment disorder. People in the
midst of adjustment disorders often do poorly in school or at work. Very
commonly they begin to have more difficulty in their close, personal
relationships. Learn more about adjustment disorders.
Personality Disorders: A personality disorder is identified by a pervasive pattern
of experience and behavior that is abnormal with respect to any two of the
following: thinking, mood, personal relations and the control of impulses. Learn more about personality disorders.
Addiction: We offer a 4, 6, and 9 week program to stop Smoking, Drinking, and
Drug use. At the end of 4 weeks each person is evaluated to see if continuing
supportive care is required. Please call us to schedule an appointment as we
would be happy to answer all your questions.
Depression: The journey to recovery seems long and
difficult you no longer need to walk alone. You can be heard; you can be
understood; you can share your hopes and fears. And you can receive the helping
hand from a fellowship of your peers.
Family Issues: The American family is a rapidly changing institution. You
may have grown up in the stereotypical American family - two parents and one or
more children, with a father who worked outside the home and a mother who
stayed home and cared for the children and the household. Today, with the entry
of so many more women into the workforce, with the increasing divorce rate, and
with the growing number of single-parent households, other family structures
have become more common.
Abuse: Relationship violence is often
experienced as a combination of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. The
following are some examples of the range of experiences that can occur. This list
includes examples of behaviors and actions that are violent and abusive and can
help you assess the healthiness of your relationship. If any of these signs are
present, you may want to seek professional help to assess the healthiness of
your relationship and your safety.
Counseling or therapy provides an opportunity
to overcome the difficulties that arise from these emotional struggles. Issues
that affect people such as stress; anxiety,
depression, difficulty creating or sustaining an intimate relationship. Also,
difficulties with couple communication issues, recovery from substance abuse
and coping with an illness or grief.
