Gay and Lesbian Issues, Life Style and Conditions. Some gays and lesbians are aware of their sexual identity at an early age and are supported by their family and friends, while others remain confused and uncertain for many years. Sometimes there is an intense emotional struggle; a feeling that you are different from others, not fitting in, holding a burdensome secret, or feeling ashamed as a result of a gay-negative culture. Gays and lesbians often experience anxiety when expressing their sexual identity to family and friends. Counseling or therapy provides an opportunity to overcome the difficulties that arise from these emotional struggles. Issues that affect heterosexual people also effect gay and lesbians such as stress; anxiety, depression, difficulty creating or sustaining an intimate relationship. Also, difficulties with couple communication issues, recovery from substance abuse and coping with an illness or grief. Jodi Silverman LCSW is available at the center to help gay and lesbian individuals, couples, adults and adolescents. She is insurance eligible and has evening and Saturday appointments available.
